Final Stats

DENTON, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team dropped its season-opener to Division I North Texas, 85-48, Friday night at the Super Pit in Denton.

James Peters led the Cowboys effort with 15 points. Zach Pickelman had nine for HSU.

The story of the game came in the opening minutes of each half. In the first half the Cowboys had no answer for 6-8, 220-pound Jeffrey Simpson as he had 17 points and made all seven of his shots.

In the second half the Cowboys went over nine minutes without scoring and the Mean Green came out hot. They put the game away with a 23-0 run to start the second half.

Simpson led the Mean Green with 17 points. Michael Sturns added 14.

HSU (0-1) will return to action Tuesday at the Mabee Complex against Southwestern.
