Cowboys Roll By Comets, 75-56

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team won the battle of the two division leaders in the American Southwest Conference with a 75-56 statement win over UT-Dallas, Thursday night in ASC action at the Mabee Complex.

Zach Pickelman scored 21 points and James Peters added 14 as the Cowboys had a balanced attack. Mardochee Jean had 11 points, eight rebounds and five blocks for HSU. The Cowboys shot 58.7 percent for the game.

The game see-sawed for the first 10 minutes and the teams were tied at 14-14. However, HSU went on a 9-0 run to make it 2-14 with 6:22 to go in the first half. Pickleman had five points in the run and he and Trent Martin had 3-pointers. HSU led 31-26 at halftime.

In the second half, the Cowboys went up 51-38 at the 10:33 mark in a lay-up by Dan Jean. UT-Dallas cut it to 56-49, but the Cowboys came right back with a 13-4 run to put the game away.

James Peters and Trent Martin held UT-Dallas sharpshooter Martin Salinas to 3-for-7 shooting and he did not make a basket in the second half. Mike McKee led the Comets with 15 points.

UT-Dallas came into the game undefeated and ranked No. 22 in the nation. They fell to 11-1 with the loss and 6-1 in ASC play. HSU improved to 5-6, but more importantly are 5-2 in conference play. HSU hosts UT-Tyler on Saturday at 3 p.m.
