Cowboys Sweep Sul Ross State

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Sul Ross State with a 16-2 win Sunday afternoon at Hunter Field and earned the right to host a first-round series in the American Southwest Conference tournament this weekend.

Sul Ross scored a run in the top of the first, using a hit, a walk, a balk and wild pitch. The Cowboys responded with four in the bottom of the first. Tre' Sellari homered to right with two outs and the Brad Coleman singled, Danny Ruth walked and Michael Simpson singled in the hole. The Cowboys scored a run on a throwing error and then Taylor Lamar had a two-run single up the middle.

Coleman singled to lead off the third and came home on a Simpson home run. The Lobos strung together a single and double and then scored on a RBI groundout by Sammy Robles. In the fourth the Cowboys added three more runs. Sellari had his second two-out home run of the game and then Coleman doubled and Ruth followed with a triple to right. Simpson added an RBI double to center in the inning.

The Cowboys added three runs in the sixth inning. Sellari had a one-out single and with two outs stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. He scored on a Ruth single. Michael Simpson had a double to right and both scored on a Taylor Lamar single to right.

HSU added four runs in the seventh inning on five hits. Coleman had a RBI single, Ruth had a two-run double and Brian Fields had a RBI single.

Simpson had five hits for HSU, Coleman added four and Ruth had three hits, drove in four and scored four. Lamar had four RBIs in the game.

Brian Arnold had a solid outing for the Cowboys. He went five innings allowing five hits, two runs and striking out five. Josh Alcorn came on in the sixth with the bases loaded and struck out the first two batters and got a ground out to end the inning. He retired the first eight batters he faced before an infield single by Billy Klientop in the eighth. Alcorn struck out seven in four innings of work to record his school-record sixth save.

HSU is now 25-15 on the year and finished ASC West play with a 15-6 record. Sul Ross State finished its season with a record of 5-34 and 3-18 in league action.

The Cowboys will host Louisiana College in a best 2-of-3 series beginning Friday at Hunter Field. The winners of the four series will advance to a four-team double elimination tournament the following weekend.
