Johnson is Brilliant As Cowboys Roll

ALPINE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team won its 10th straight American Southwest Conference game with a 13-1 win over Sul Ross State, Friday night at Kokernot Field in Alpine.

Starting pitcher Lance Johnson and two-out hitting were the story of the game for HSU. Johnson worked seven strong innings and the Cowboys scored 10 of their 13 runs with two outs.

Johnson carried a no-hitter until there were two outs in the fifth inning, when Richard Madrid and Will Montano had back-to-back singles for the Lobos. Sammy Robles had a one-out double in the seventh inning.

For the game, Johnson (4-1) allowed just three hits and no runner reached third base in his seven innings of work. Johnson has given up just one run in his last 16 and 2/3 innings of work.

The Cowboys scored their first run in the second inning when Blake Koch had a two-out RBI single. HSU added four runs in the third inning and again they came with two outs. Taylor Lamar's groundout for the second out of the inning scored Michael Simpson, James Gage then had an RBI single, Trevor Bunte and Taylor Gibbs had back-to-back RBI doubles.

Ruth had an RBI double in the fourth inning and Koch had a two-out RBI single in the seventh. Simpson scored on a wild pitch in the eighth, Gage had an RBI single on his fourth hit of the night in the eighth and Gibbs had an RBI fielder's choice and Koch had a two-run double. Gage added an RBI single in the ninth.

Reinaldo Araujo had the Lobos only run with a solo home run to right in the eighth inning.

Gage had fives hits, scored three runs and had three RBIs. Koch had four hits, four RBIs and Stepp had four hits and scored three runs.

The Cowboys are now 23-15 on the year and 11-7 in league play. Sul Ross State fell to 6-31 and 1-18 in ASC play. The two teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. The games can be heard on KSLI 1280-AM.
