April 8, 2003 ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons baseball team won 5-3 over Trinity in non-conference action Tuesday at Hunter Field. The Cowboys jumped to the lead after scoring four runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Seth Gandy led off HSU with a solo homer while four batters later, Jeff Wisner, the designated hitter, singled and brought home Brian Whitworth. Second baseman John Schlaffer was up next and singled on which Ryan Devere scored. Right fielder Elliot Strader then singled which brought home Jeff Wisner. With a 4-0 lead, HSU then scored one run in the bottom of the third inning off of third baseman Tim Donnelly's single. Trinity remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning in which the Tigers scored an unearned run off of Jason Armstrong's single. The Cowboys were still ahead 5-1, the Tigers then scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning off of Jason Armstrong's double in their last rally of the day. Seth Gandy and Jeff Wisner both had two hits and one RBI each for the Cowboys while Jason Armstrong led Trinity with two hits and three RBIs. Craig Foreman (2-5) pitched a complete nine inning game, struck out six Tigers and picked up the win for HSU while Mike Kelly pitched 2.1 innings and took the loss for Trinity. HSU improved to14-15 overall while Trinity dropped to 24-5 overall. The Cowboys will be back in action Friday as they travel to Belton to take to Mary Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference action at 2 p.m. |
