Cowboys Fall To Concordia

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped the first game of its American Southwest Conference series with Concordia-Austin, 9-5, Friday night at Hunter Field in Abilene.

Concordia scored in the first inning when Ryen Pounds had a triple into the 35 mph wind and scored on a Jason Pyle sacrifice fly. CUA scored two more runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Tornados scored on an error and a RBI groundout by Jason Winkler.

The Cowboys scored their lone run in the third inning when Trevor Bunte led off with a single and moved to second and third on consecutive wild pitches and scored on a Ryan Stepp RBI groundout.

Winkler had a two-run single in the fifth and Greg Warren added an RBI single. IN the sixth Concordia went ahead 8-1 with a pair of runs. The Tornados tacked on a run in the ninth to setup the final score.

The Cowboys scored a run in the ninth when Ryan Stepp was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved up on a Taylor Gibbs single and scored on a Brad Coleman single. HSU scored a pair of runs when Danny Ruth reached on an infield single and the throw got away down the line. James Gage had an RBI single later in the inning to make it 9-5.

Kurtis Lay (4-4) took the loss for the Cowboys. He worked five and one-third innings allowing nine hits eight runs (five earned) while striking out five. Steven Smith (4-3) earned the win for Concordia.

HSU fell to 18-12 overall and 8-5 in ASC West action. Concordia improved to 18-10 overall and 10-1 in league play. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
