Cowboys Sweep Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team swept Schreiner, 5-0 and 4-1, Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play at Mountaineer Field in Kerrville.

The Cowboys scored all nine runs in the doubleheader with two outs and had four double plays on the day on defense. With the wins the Cowboys improved to 17-11 overall 8-4 in ASC West play. Schreiner fell to 5-21 overall and 2-10 in league play.

In the first game Dalton Rucker (3-2) threw a masterpiece, allowing only three singles and not allowing only one runner past first base. He struck out eight batters in the game. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 15 innings of work.

The Cowboys jumped on top with two runs in the second inning. Tre' Sellari reached on an error and eventually came around to score on a double play groundout. Danny Ruth, who had a single earlier in the inning eventually scored on a wild pitch.

HSU added a run in the third when Taylor Lamar reached on an error and moved to second on a sac bunt and to third on a groundout. Brad Coleman knocked him in with a two-out RBI single to center. HSU made it 5-0 in the fifth with a pair of two-out RBI singles by Coleman and Sellari.

Coleman had two hits and drove in two and to lead a seven-hit attack. Jeremiah Kester had two of the three Schreiner hits. Chris Armijo (1-5) took the loss for Schreiner, allowing five runs (two earned) in four and 2/3 innings. The seven-inning game sailed by in one hour and 36 minutes.

In the second game, Kurtis Lay was solid in his second start of the season. He went the distance scattering nine hits to improve to 4-3.

Schreiner took the lead in the first inning on a triple by Johnny Huizar and a RBI groundout by Joe Mann. The Cowboys came up with three two-out runs in the third. Trevor Bunte led off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Taylor Lamar. After a fly out, Sellari walked and Coleman drove in Bunte with a single. Michael Simpson followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0.

Bunte singled in the fourth and came around to score on a Ryan Stepp RBI. After that the pitchers settled in and took over the game. Roger Ayala was solid for Schreiner allowing eight hits and four runs. Bunte led the Cowboys' offense with three hits. Coleman had two hits and Simpson had a pair of hits and RBIs.

The Cowboys will return to action on Tuesday at Austin College in a non-conference game in Sherman. --- HSU Athletics ---
