Cowboys Sweep UMHB

Final Stats

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons swept a pair of one run games from Mary Hardin-Baylor, 3-2 and 4-3, in American Southwest Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Hunter Field.

In the bottom of the seventh of the first game, Brad Coleman led off with a walk and moved over on a sac bunt by Danny Ruth. Kevin Ellison pinch ran for Coleman and after Bo Vaculik had walked scored on a game-winning single to center by Blake Koch.

HSU scored its first run in the second when Tre' Sellari hit his second home run of the series. A solo shot to center field. The Cowboys scratched another run in the fourth to make it 2-0. Vaculik had a two out double to left and scored on a Sellari single to right.

UMHB tied the game in the fifth with a pair of unearned runs. Will Doyle reached on a bunt single and a throwing error on the play advanced him to second. He was bunted over to third and scored on a Brad Coleman error at third on a Adam Froeschel tapper. Ricky LaFont singled home Froeschel after he was balked to second with two outs.

Dalton Rucker (2-2) pitched one of his best games of the year. He threw a complete game and struck out eight, while scattering four hits. He allowed two unearned runs in the fifth. Blair Bundy (0-2) took the loss for UMHB in relief of Cody Walker. He allowed one run on three hits in two innings.

Taylor Lamar, Ryan Stepp, Sellari and Koch each had two hits for the Cowboys. Ricky LaFont had two hits for UMHB.

In the second game the Cowboys scored all of their runs in the fifth inning. Ryan Stepp had a two run-single just by a drawn in infield and Michael Simpson followed with a two-run home run. Mary Hardin-Baylor scored a run in the seventh on a Doyle home run and Earnest Pena had a two-run home run in the ninth.

Simpson had three hits for the Cowboys and Brian Arnold went the distance on the mound, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs to earn the win. Steve Havard took the loss for UMHB. HSU is now 14-10 on the year and 5-4 in ASC West action. Mary Hardin-Baylor fell to 9-13 overall and 3-6 in league play. HSU travels to Plainview for a game at Wayland Baptist on Tuesday.
