Final Stats

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team broke through first in its three-game series with McMurry with an 8-4 win to snap the Indians 12-game ASC West winning streak, Friday night at Hunter Field in Abilene.

The Cowboys put two runs on the board in the first inning when Barry Janisse was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a Justin Wilson double. Michael Popino had an RBI single and Michael Simpson followed with a sacrifice fly.

McMurry scored in third when Mike Vives singles, Joseph Cervantez was it by a pitch and moved up on an Albert Carrizales sac bunt. Vives scored on a wild pitch. The Indians went ahead with two runs in the fifth on a Carrizales RBI single and a Kevin Heady RBI double.

HSU came back and took the lead for good in the fifth when Wilson followed a Janisse single with a two run home run. The Cowboys scored two runs on a throwing error in the seventh and Elliot Strader had a RBI triple and Brad Coleman an RBI single to make it 8-3. McMurry scored a run in the eighth.

Wilson led the way for the Cowboys offense with three hits, including a double and his ninth home run of the season. He also scored three runs and drove in two. All nine Cowboy starters had at least one hit in the 12-hit attack.

Albert Carrizales, Kevin Heady and Brent Voorhees had two hits each for McMurry.

Kurtis Lay picked up the win with three innings of one run relief of Dalton Rucker. Rucker pitched four and two-third innings allowing three runs on six hits in 90 pitches. Kyle Tabor came on with two on and two out in the eighth and recorded his second save of the year. Voorhees fell to 2-2 for McMurry. He gave up five runs on eight hits in six innings.

Hardin-Simmons improved to 13-9 overall and 5-2 in ASC West action. McMurry fell to 16-9 overall and 6-1 in league play. The two teams will close the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
