ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team lost a pitcher's duel 3-2 in 10 innings in the first game of a three-game series with Mary Hardin-Baylor, Friday night at Hunter Field. Hardin-Simmons broke up a scoreless game with a run in the fifth on a leadoff home run by Tre' Sellari. UMHB answered in the sixth with a run to tie the game. Earnest Pena and Adam Froeschel had back-to-back doubles for UMHB. UMHB took the lead in the eighth at 2-1 when they scored an unearned run. HSU responded in the eighth to tie the game at 2-2 on doubles by Taylor Lamar and Michael Simpson. The Crusaders scored the winning run in the 10th when Will Doyle led off with a bunt single, he was cut off at second on a bunt attempt by Kyle Shipp. Shipp was forced out at second on a fielder's choice by Pena. Pena moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a Froeschl single. Kurtis Lay pitched great in his first start of the season for the Cowboys. He went nine and two-third innings, striking out six allowing only five hits and two earned runs. He was matched by T.J. McKnight, who went nine innings and allowed two runs to earn the win. R.B. Garza pitched a scoreless 10th for the save. HSU is now 12-10 on the year and UMHB improved to 9-11. Both teams are now 3-4 in ASC West play. The two will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. |
