Cowboys Fall To UMHB

BELTON, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped a 7-6 game to Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first game of their American Southwest Conference series, Friday afternoon at Red Murff Field in Belton, Texas.

The game was back and forth throughout as the Crusaders answered the Cowboys run in the four innings HSU scored. HSU scored a pair of runs in the first on a wild pitch and a Michael Simpson double. UMHB responded with an RBI by Adam Froeschel.

HSU added two runs in the third inning on a wild pitch and an RBI double by Brad Coleman. UMHB came back with two runs on five hits.

HSU scored on run in the fifth to make it 5-3. Ryan Stepp had the RBI on an infield single. The difference in the game was UMHB scored three runs in the fifth. R.B. Garza had an RBI single, Andrew White had a bases loaded walk Jonathan Whitehead then gave the Crusaders a 6-5 lead with a sacrifice fly.

The Cowboys tied the game with a Simpson two-out single that scored Coleman, who had doubled with two outs. UMHB came right back with a run in the seventh on a Garza fielder's choice. HSU had a runner on third in the ninth, but flied Simpson flied out to right to end the game.

Taylor Gibbs had three hits for the Cowboys and scored three runs. Simpson had three hits and Coleman and Stepp each had two hits.

HSU is now 12-11 overall and 1-5 in ASC play and UMHB improved to 13-10-1 overall and 6-1 in league play. The teams will play a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
