HSU Split Games With Sul Ross In Doubleheader

ALPINE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons baseball team won 17-6 in the first game and lost 13-9 in the second game against Sul Ross State in an American Southwest Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Kokernot Field in Alpine.

In the first game of the day, John Schlaffer singled to left field which brought home Ryan Devere and Chuy Rodriguez to score two runs in the first inning. Josh Anderlohr was next to bat and once again hit a two-run homer to give the Cowboys a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

HSU scored one run in the second, third and fourth innings on hits from Brady Coke, Rodriguez and Schlaffer. The Cowboys were up 7-0 in the top of the fourth inning. Sul Ross then scored four runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to close in the lead 7-4.

But the game was not over; the Cowboys secured the win in the sixth inning when they scored six runs on four hits to widen the lead to 13-4. HSU then scored four runs on five hits in the top of the seventh inning. Sul Ross scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh but could not stop the Cowboys.

Chuy Rodriguez was four-for-four from the plate while John Schlaffer and Josh Anderlohr were four-for-five. Rodriguez tripled once, while Schlaffer doubled three times. Anderlohr led with four RBIs while Schlaffer and Coke had three RBIs each.

Jonathan Emens (2-0) pitched six innings, struck out five Lobos and picked up the win for the Cowboys. Matt Hinds pitched one inning and was credited with the save. Victor Lozano (3-5) took the loss for the Lobos.

In the second game of the conference doubleheader, HSU started off with an 8-3 lead till the bottom of the fourth inning when Sul Ross scored six runs to tie the game up 8-8.

The Cowboys did not score any runs in the fifth inning. Sul Ross then took the lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning making it 13-8.

HSU tried to finish the game and come back from the five point deficit in the top of the seventh, but could only score one run.

Chuy Rodriguez had a one-run homer in the sixth inning and a double, Brady Coke had one triple and four RBIs and Ryan Devere had one double for the Cowboys.

Craig Foreman (0-5) took the loss for the Cowboys while Adam Llanez (1-0) picked up the win for the Lobos.

The Cowboys moved to 10-10 overall and 6-6 in ASC action while Sul Ross moved to 5-19 overall and 3-9 in ASC play.

HSU will host Texas Lutheran in conference action Friday night at Hunter Field starting at 7p.m.
