Schedule/Results | Roster | News | Archives Cowboys Lose Two at Schreiner
March 21, 2008
KERRVILLE, Texas - For the third straight series, Hardin-Simmons baseball team won the first game and then dropped the next two as they were swept by Schreiner in an American Southwest Conference doubleheader, 4-3 in 11 innings and 4-1, Friday afternoon in Kerrville. HSU only had five hits on the day as its offensive woes in league play continued. The Cowboys are averaging 6.5 runs per game on the year, but in conference play they have averaged just 3.7 runs per game in league play and have not scored more than six runs in any league game. HSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game, but the bats went silent. HSU starting pitcher Nathan Copeland was perfect threw the first five innings, but gave up a hit and hit batsmen to put the first two runners on in the sixth. HSU went to relief ace Josh Alcorn, the ASC's all-time saves leader, but Alcorn walked the first batter he faced to load the bases with no outs. Rey Martinez had an RBI single and Eric Crenwelge tied the game with a two-out, two-run single. After that, the two teams could not score until A.J. Mann hit a home run to lead off the 10th inning. He also had thrown three and one-third innings of one-hit scoreless relief. In the second game, Schreiner starter Kevin Jones (3-2) threw a complete game one-hitter as Schreiner won 4-1. R.C. Waters had the only hit for the Cowboys. The second game was a seven-inning game per ASC rules. If the first game of the doubleheader goes to extra innings, the second game moves to the seven inning game. The Cowboys are now 12-10 on the year and fell to 3-6 in conference play. Schreiner improved to 8-17 overall and 5-4 in league play. HSU plays at Lubbock Christian on Tuesday. |
