KERRVILLE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team defeated Schreiner, 6-2, in the opening game of its three-game American Southwest Conference series Thursday afternoon in Kerrville. HSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the third inning. J.T. Armstrong led off the second inning with a double and R.C. Waters drove him in with a two-out single. In the third inning, Taylor Berlin led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by James Gage and to third on a wild pitch. He scored on an RBI single by Pimpton. After a fly out by Armstrong, Andrew Rehling singled Pimpton to third. Kyle Post singled home Pimpton and Waters doubled in Rehling. Schreiner scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning. HSU added a single run in the seventh inning when Pimpton led off with a single and moved to third on an error. Post then singled home Pimpton. HSU added an insurance run in the ninth when Pimpton walked and moved to second on a Armstrong sac bunt. Pimpton moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a post sacrifice fly to left field. James Sweatman (2-2) gave the Cowboys their best effort of the season out of a starting pitcher. He scattered six hits in seven and one-third innings of work. He allowed two earned runs and struck out seven. Kyle Barton worked the final inning and two-thirds for his first save of the year. Post, Pimpton and Stepp each had three hits for the Cowboys. Post drove in three runs and R.C. Waters had two RBIs and a pair of hits. The Cowboys are now 12-8 on the year and 3-4 in league play. Schreiner fell to 6-17 overall and 3-4 in conference play. The teams will play a noon doubleheader on Friday. --- HSU --- |
