ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons baseball team won 17-5 and lost 10-4 to Howard Payne in an American Southwest Conference doubleheader action Saturday at Hunter Field. In the 15-7 win over HPU, the Cowboys started out strong with a 7-0 lead in the second inning. John Schlaffer hit a three-run homer to right field. The Yellow Jackets came back in the third inning to score five runs. HSU controlled the lead into the sixth inning, where Schlaffer hit a two-run homer and Ryan Devere hit a one-run homer both to left field. Schlaffer, Devere, Brady Coke and Tim Donnelly led with three hits. Matt Hinds (3-0) picked up the win for the Cowboys while Steven Cordero took the loss for the Yellow Jackets. In the second game of the doubleheader, HPU secured the lead in the sixth inning by scoring six runs on hits from Stephen Lynn, Oscar Luna and Richard Gutierrez. Chuy Rodriguez led the Cowboys with three hits while Josh Anderlohr and Coke had two. The Cowboys move to 8-8 overall and 4-5 in ASC action while HPU moves to 9-7 overall and 5-4 in ASC play. HSU will host Tarleton State in non-conference action at Hunter Field at 7 p.m. |
