March 10, 2008
ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons baseball team dropped an 8-2 game to No. 15 Marietta College in the first game of the Abilene Spring Break Invitational at Driggers Field on the McMurry campus. The game was slated for the afternoon at Hunter Field, but wet conditions forced it into a night game across town. Nathan Copeland deserved a better fate as he was solid for the first six innings. He allowed only one hit through the first six innings. In the seventh he was a victim of some bad luck. With a runner on and two outs he got a chopper back to him and his throw to first was dropped by Taylor Berlin. A passed ball and a wild pitch and the run scored. After that Copeland and Eric Roten lost control and had five walks in the inning. Marietta scored seven runs. HSU had scored the first two runs of the game in the third inning on a Brian Weeks RBI double and a Ryan Stepp RBI single. Copeland took the loss to fall to 0-1. Tim Knowlton moved to 2-0 with a complete-game six-hitter for Marietta. HSU has lost three straight and is now 9-6 on the year. They will play UT-Tyler at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. That is a game time change due to the wet field. |
