SEGUIN, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team opened its American Southwest Conference season with a 7-2 win over defending ASC champion Texas Lutheran, Friday afternoon in Seguin.

HSU jumped on the board in the second when Brad Coleman led off with a single and scored when Michael Simpson hit a home run. The Cowboys added two more in the third when Blake Koch led off and was moved over by a Taylor Lamar bunt. Ryan Stepp then tripled him in. Coleman drove in Stepp with a two-out single.

In the fifth, Koch led off with a double and was moved over by a Lamar sac bunt. Stepp and Coleman were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Simpson had a two-run single to make it 6-0. Lamar had a sac fly in the ninth to make it 7-0. Brett Cannon had a two-run home run for the Bulldogs in the ninth.

Brian Arnold (1-0) scattered 12 hits for the Cowboys in seven and two-thirds scoreless innings. Simpson had a pair of hits and drove in four in the game. Coleman was 2-for-2.

HSU is now 8-5 on the year and 1-0 in ASC West play. Texas Lutheran fell to 7-5-1 and 0-1. The teams will play a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
