March 10, 2004
ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team made a late run at Southwestern on Wednesday afternoon, but the rally ended on a double play and HSU fell 10-7 to the Pirates in the Abilene Baseball Classic at Hunter Field. The Cowboys jumped out early to a 3-1 lead in the first inning when Barry Janisse singled through the right side and came home on a double by Michael Popino. Justin Wilson drove in Popino with a home run to right. Southwestern then took advantage of three walks and added four hits in the second inning for a six run inning. In the seventh inning trailing 10-4, the Cowboys scored three quick runs when Michael Simpson singled to right, Ryan Gibbs was hit by a pitch and Elliot Strader doubled in Simpson. Brad Coleman then walked to load the bases and Brandon Beene doubled to right giving the Cowboys a 10-7 deficit with runners on second and third and no outs. Barry Janisse hit a shallow fly ball to left that was not deep enough to score Coleman from third and Andy Harrington hit a line drive shot to second, which was fielded and through back to the second base bag for the double play. Freshman Patrick Brandt took the loss for HSU in his fist career start and Adam Schnapper earned the win for Southwestern. HSU fell to 7-5 with the loss and Southwestern improved to 10-4 on the year.
