March 10, 2003 ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split a pair of games in the first day of the Abilene Spring Break Baseball Classic, falling 12-1 to Wayland Baptist in the opener before bouncing back to beat Southwestern, 1-0 in the nightcap. Jonathan Emens had a four-hit shutout for the Cowboys in the win over Southwestern. He struck out six and walked three. Elliot Strader drove in the games only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. John Schlaffer led off with an infield single to deep third base and moved to second on a walk by Josh Anderlohr. Strader then deposited a single to center to give the Cowboys the only offense they needed. Chris Callicutt pitched six innings for the Pirates and allowed just five hits and struck out three. Strader led the Cowboy attack with a pair of hits. Strader also was a key element of the defense when he threw out a base runner at the plate in the fifth inning. In the first game Wayland Baptist put together 14 hits and had a grand slam by Dan Planeta in the fourth inning. Bradey Coke had the Cowboys lone RBI and was one of seven HSU hitters with a hit. Tyler Mayo (0-2) took the loss for the Cowboys. HSU is now 6-6 on the season and Southwestern fell to 9-5. Wayland Baptist improved to 15-8 with their win. HSU will play again Wednesday against Montclair State at 5 p.m. Note - HSU's game with Howard Payne on Friday has been moved to a 2 p.m. start, due to the NCAA Sectionals being hosted by the Cowgirl basketball team. |
