March 8, 2004
ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team won its fourth straight game as it defeated St. Francis (Ill.), 6-0, in the first game of the Abilene Spring Break Classic, Monday afternoon at Hunter Field. Senior pitcher Brian Whitworth made quick work of the Fighting Saints as he scattered four hits and faced just three batters over the minimum to move to 1-1 on the year. Whitworth has not allowed an earned run in 8.1 innings of work this season. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. The Cowboys jumped on the board with back-to-back doubles in the first inning. Barry Janisse doubles to left center and came home on Andy Harrington shot past the first baseman down the right field line. In the second the Cowboys picked up another run when Elliot Strader walked and stole second and came home on a Tim Donnelly double. HSU plated three in the third when Janisse tripled home Michael Simpson, who had walked to lead off the inning. Michael Popino then hit his second home run of the year a line drive shot to right that scored Janisse. Popino singled to center to lead off the field and moved to third on a Justin Wilson double. He scored on a wild pitch to give the Cowboys their sixth run. Popino had two hits and a pair of RBIs and Janisse had two hits with a double and triple. Wilson also added a pair of hits to lead the Cowboy offense. Hardin-Simmons improved to 7-3 on the year and they have now won four straight games. HSU will play Friends (Kan.) at 2:30 on Tuesday at Hunter Field. |
