ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons completed its three game sweep of Austin College with a 12-4 win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader in American Southwest Conference crossover action at Hunter Field. Ausitn College got on the board in the first inning with two unearned runs, but the Cowboys responded with five tallies in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Michael Simpson walked to lead off the first, Barry Janisse followed with a single to center. Andy Harrington doubled in Simpson and Michael Popino followed with a two-run single to center. Justin Wilson then doubled to right and Popino advanced to third. After a pop up and a strike out, Scott Drake drove in both runners with a single to right. In the third, the Cowboys scored five more runs when Ryan Gibbs led off with a walk. After a strike out and foul out, the Cowboys did all of their damage with two outs. Simpson walked, Janisse follwed with a double to right-center scoring Gibbs and Simpson. Harrington hit a flare to center scoring Janisse and Popino followed with a line-drive home run to right field. Justin Wilson and Elliot Strader hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning to set-up the final score. Josh Bishop (2-1) settled down after a rocky start and dominated the back half of the game for his second win of the season. He allowed just four hits, only two after the first in five innings of work, struck out eight and allowed just two unearned runs. Chaz Frankenberry gave up eight runs in two and two-thirds innings of work to take the loss for the Kangaroos. Popino led the Cowboys offensive attack with two hits, a home run and four RBIs. Janisse, Harrington and Drake had two RBIs each. Hardin-Simmons improved to 6-3 with the win and Austin College fell to 0-12. HSU returns to action Monday at noon when it hosts St. Francis in the Abilene Spring Break Tournament at Hunter Field. |
