Cowboys Drop Wayland Baptist in 14 Innings

ABILENE, Texas - Ryan Devere's two-run single in the bottom of the 14th inning gave Hardin-Simmons a dramatic 11-10 win over Wayland Baptist in non-conference baseball action, Tuesday night at Hunter Field.

Devere hit a single through the left side after James Beard led off the inning with a walk. Brandon Beene bunted over Jeff Wisner, who ran for Beene. Chuy Rodriguez and John Schlaffer were both hit by pitches to load the bases.

The Cowboys got a great pitching performance from freshman Jared May. He went 6 and 2/3 innings giving up just three hits and allowing just one earned run. He walked two and struck out two, after replacing starter Josh Bishop in the top of the second.

HSU got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with when Brandon Beene led off with a single and advanced to second on a Chuy Rodriguez walk. He moved over to third on a fly out and Ryan Devere knocked him with a sacrifice fly to center.

WBU scored four runs in the top of the second and the Cowboys responded with four in their half of the second. Andy Harrington led off with a single, Elliot Strader followed with a single off the pitcher and after a fly out by Seth Gandy, Brandon Beene walked to load the bases. Chuy Rodriguez then deposited a grand slam over the right field wall to give the Cowboys a 5-4 lead.

Wayland tied the game in the fourth with a Jason Broussard home run to right field. The Cowboys held the Pioneers scoreless until the ninth. May did not allow a hit from the home run with no out in the fourth, until a leadoff single in the ninth. The only runners that reaches were three hit batters.

The Cowboys picked up a pair of runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth. In the sixth Strader singled and stole second with two outs. He scored on a Seth Gandy double. Gandy scored on a double by Brian Whitworth.

In the eighth Harrington led off with a single and stole second. He scored on a Strader single up the middle. Strader scored on a groundout by Beene.

In the top of the ninth, Brad Wuensche singled to start the inning for WBU. Calen Laos was hit by a pitch, before josh Milner flied out to right. Dan Palenta walked to load the bases and two runs scored on a Rodriguez error. Mike Richardson then walked to load the bases. Richardson scored on a wild pitch that ended May's night. Garrett tied the game with an RBI ground out to second.

Matt Hinds (2-0) picked up the win for the Cowboys after not giving up a run in the 13th in relief of Rodriguez. Rodriguez started off pitching the 13th by hitting Milner. Milner stole second and came around on a bloop single by Julio Hinojoso.

Strader went 4-for-4 for the Cowbous and Devere added three RBIs.

HSU (3-4) returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts UT-Dallas in conference action. Wayland Baptist falls to 11-7 on the year.
