Cowboys Drop Doubleheader at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss. - Hardin-Simmons could not hold a 3-0 lead and fell 4-3 in eight innings in the first game of doubleheader and then dropped the nightcap 9-5 to even their record at 3-3 on the year in American Southwest Conference Crossover action in Clinton, Miss., on Saturday afternoon.

In the opening game the Cowboys scored three runs on four hits in the second inning and held on to the lead until the seventh inning. Mississippi College scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning and tied the game in the seventh to send the game into an extra inning.

Scott Drake started the third with a single and moved to third on a Michael Simpson double. Barry Janisse then moved up both runners on a sacrifice fly. Andy Harrington folloiwed with a run scoring double and Michael Popino scored Harrington on a single.

The Choctaws were able to scratch when a putout attempt on a bunt ended up in leftfield.

Simpson led the Cowboys with three hits and Harrington added a pair of hits. Brian Whitworth took the loss out of the bullpen on the unearned run.

In the nightcap, Mississippi College roughed up starter Josh Bishop and reliever Matt Hinds for six runs in the first inning.

Michael Popino had a pair of hits for the Cowboys and Brad Coleman, Tim Donnelly and Will Hart all had RBIs for the Cowboys. Josh Bisop took the loss to fall to 1-1.

MC improved to 5-1 with the wins and HSU fell to 3-3. The Cowboys will be in action Tuesday at Wayland Baptist.
