Cowboys Rally For Season Opening Win

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team scored four runs in the eighth in inning to rally for a 5-4 win over the College of the Southwest Sunday afternoon at Hunter Field.

The Cowboys went ahead 1-0 in the sixth inning when Taylor Lamar hit a ball off the pitchers leg he fielded it with two outs but overthrew first base and Lamar advanced to second. Barry Janisse cashed in on the error with a double to left.

CSW came up with four runs in the eighth. Eric Hellekson reached on a Brad Coleman error and then Scott Williams reached on a Craig Foreman error. A bunt single by Brady Haygood loaded the bases. Timothy Dallas hit a shot off of Foreman to tie the game at 1-1. Eric Jennings followed with a sacrifice fly to right to give the Mustangs the lead. Brett Crossland then drove in two more runs with a double to make it 4-1.

The Cowboys responded as Scott Drake was hit by a pitch, Taylor Lamar walked and Janisse reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. Justin Wilson and Michael Popino each had RBI walks. Michael Simpson struck out and then Craig Johnson had a two-run single through the right side.

Foreman had a quality start for the Cowboys. He allowed four unearned runs and struck out five in 7 and 1/3 innings. Senior Kyle Tabor came in and struck out three and did not allow a hit in 1 and 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

The Cowboys will play Oklahoma Baptist at noon on Monday followed by a 6 p.m. game with Lubbock Christian.
